It is hard to believe that it has been almost a year since we came together with this idea.  I know because I started to put this website together the night of the very first meeting.  Now it will be up for another 4 years.
Thanks

November 6, 2009

We get a tour of the school and a great lunch and then the Cobras clinch home field advantage for the first round of the play-offs.

Going out to practice.

Finest High School I have ever seen.  Cobras Pride evident everywhere.
Trophy cases are throughout the school, and they are full.
The students and athletes were outstanding!

This is Cobra Cafe a great dining facility operated by the culinary arts students, great food and service!  Oh yeah this is where the Cobras get served their pre-game meal by the faculty and administrators.  Coach flip talked to the team about their "want -to" before the game; after the meal.  The food is great.  Cobras want to this night would be great after trailing 13-0 first quarter and later in the fourth by 6 they came back and won 32-26.

Kickin it at the COBRA CAFE!  We had the same pre-game meal as the team.

Coach was levitating next to a few of our old trophies!

Inside the Gym.

What a gym.

Cobras,

There is a tremendous effort to bring our story to the big screen, there is a possibility even that it might turn a profit.  You can invest in Team Cobra LLC  for as little 100.00 to help with the costs of development of this Movie. And share in the profits (if there are any) in direct proportion to the amount you have invested.

TEAM COBRA, LLC, is the entity that has been established to fund the filming of the Reunion and to profit in the resulting film (if that ship comes in). All players, families of deceased players, coaches, and trainers of the 1970 and 1971 teams, have the ability to purchase up to 5 Units each, at $100 per Unit. The deadline for purchasing Units is August 31, 2009.

Some of the individuals on the planning committee (and Rodney Triplett) have been given an opportunity to acquire a few additional Units because of their significant efforts in putting the reunion and this project together.

TEAM COBRA, LLC, will be managed by Larry Lee, Rodney Triplett, and myself.

If you elect to purchase one or more units, then please make your check payable to “Team Cobra, LLC” and deliver the check to my attention.

Yes to both questions.  I can’t express in words, and certainly not in an email, how indebted my entire family is to all of you who put this program together.  I had huge hopes for the event and ALL of my expectations were exceeded.  As we drove home Sunday morning, my sister Carol called to ask how everything went, and the only word I could think of that came close to describing the experience was “PERFECT”.  Thanks so much for everything everyone did and I am looking forward to a continuing relationship with the extended Cobra family as we move ahead with this project.

Anyone paying by credit card (MasterCard, Visa and Discover Card only) must contact either Don or Derrick Nelson at  772-461-6159 or e-mail one of them at don@econochem.com or derrick@econochem.com . I believe there should be a 4% surcharge to all credit card payments because that is what the credit card companies charge to process the payments.David

Justin, (July 5, 2009)
Was just looking over the website and saw that jerseys  could be ordered. Is
it too late?

Justin forwarded your e-mail to me. The Jerseys are already in (they were special ordered and made in the Phillipines). I am advised that they will make more if at least 12 people order. I think we have 3 already who want to order, and if you decide to order. I'm sure there will be more once the rest of the team sees the Jerseys (there were 31 in the initial order). Unfortunately, the price will be $80 per jersey on an order of 12, and it will take about 4 weeks. We actually paid $70 per jersey on the initial batch because it was over 30 jerseys. I've copied a picture of the jersey below.

Regards,
David

  • This is in todays Orlando Sentinel.  Don't know if he would but I'd love to have Bill Buchalter at our reunion to record and interview.  Coach

Subject: Orlando Sentinel article on Cobra Reunion

Reunion set for 1970-71 Fort Pierce Central squad

Talk about Florida's rich high school football tradition. Check out these stats:

In 1970 and '71, Fort Pierce Central went 24-2, won a state title and sent more than 20 players to college programs.

Four of those players earned All-America honors and were drafted by NFL teams. Three more went to NFL camps, and two had sons who played and eventually were drafted by NFL teams. One of those was Buster Davis, the former Daytona Beach Mainland andFlorida State linebacker and son of ex-Cobra James Davis. The other was Mario Monds, son of Wonder Monds.

Five — Harrison FreemanRon EvansKenny MillsGreg Pressley and Willie Gordon — became ministers. Freeman was Central's first 1,000-yard rusher and all-state selection. Four became successful business leaders — Larry LeePaul ZinterDavid Sowerby and Hank Melton.

    Bill BuchalterE-mail | Recent columns
Lee was inducted into the Livingstone College Hall of Fame. Zinter earned honorable mention All-America honors at Eastern New Mexico. Both found their way to NFL camps. Sowerby is an attorney, and Melton earned a doctorate from UNLV in hotel management and later taught at UCF for six years.

Phil Farinella, who coached at Central during that era and now lives in Winter Haven, said a Cobra reunion of those first two teams is scheduled for July 11 at Panther Wood Country Club in Fort Pierce. Included will be a ring presentation.

Paul, Coach Bass, Derrick, David, Coach Flip, and Justin

Please post this. I am writing this e-mail and asking Justin to post it because I want all Cobras to see what has gone into this project. While we still have much work to do, I want to thank the following people that have worked so hard in making this reunion a success. To Coach Phil Farinella; It was your idea to get the ball moving and you have personally spoken to almost every player and coach you could find and tried your best to get them to participate. You have constantly been the wind beneath our wings and we thank you. To Justin Ritchie; You have done an awesome job with our website. We all really appreciate the countless hours you have put into this website and the late night conversations that you have had with many of us. I can truly say on behalf of the teams that we all have been inspired by what you have brought back to life and we thank you. To David Sowerby; You have been been the calming voice. Thank you for hosting the meetings and the conference calls. I have gotten to see your heart for helping people. You are a very caring person. You were the quiet guy that got the job done on the championship team and you are still doing the same today. We are very gratefull for what you are doing. To Hank Melton; Even though you live way out west in Vegas, you have been so much to this team.

You are prehaps one of the busiest guys I know, but you found time because of what this team meant to you. On behalf of the teams, thanks for all you have done especially the rings. That is something we all have waited 38 and 39 years for. Thank you. To Harry Williams; Thank you for making arrangements with Fort Pierce Central High to have the memorial services for our fallen teammates. You also were able to find and restore the trophies from both teams. You personally tracked down teammates that we were having a hard time finding. Thanks for all you have done. To Alvin Miller; You were not on either of the teams, but you worked as hard as any of us to make this project a success. Your inspirational e-mails to me did so much for me. Thank you for putting the memorial service program together. You are a great organizer. Thanks to Paul Zinter, Don and Derrick Nelson, Terry Mosley and Ron Argrett for attending the meetings and helping to locate teammates. I also want to mention somethings I have observed about our teammates. We had two teammates that had planned a special trip with their wives during the time we are having the reunion. This reunion meant so much to them that their wives agreed to let them be a part of it by rescheduling their trips. We had one of our teammates that recemtly got laid off because of the back economy, but drove 200 miles round trip to personally pay for his ring. We had several teammates that paid for other teammates rings and some paid for the entire weekend. We had another teammate that is making arrangements to bring one our teammates that is in a nursing home in St Petersburg to the reunion and another that paid for that same person's ring. We have teammates coming from all over the country to relive our great past. I am so excited about this reunion because I have not seen some of these guys since high school. I have so many stories I can tell you about our teammates, but I will never finish this e-mail if I tried. God put us all together for a reason. It is hard to find them like us anymore. I love you guys and you helped me become the man I am today. I give each of you a personal thank you for helping to shape my life.

    Bro Larry Lee,Jr.

Larry many thanks to you, because your ongoing enthusiasm and big picture positive attitude along with your tireless work effort, contacts in the community and Love for your fellow human beings are truly the fuel that drive this machine.

    Justin

Justin reread your words (3 years with Coach Triplett) The consensus among many at that time was that damage to your brain was done previous to my meager forearm blasts to your forehead.  I know David's a great attorney, but find it hard to believe he could convince a jury I caused the damage, I think my attorney would only need to produce one or two of your baby pictures to prove our case,  Yours with love (and another forearm)            Coach

Larry, Coach, Paul, David, Don, Coaches Bass and Mosely, Justin and of course the Pretty one: Coach's wife met today to discuss the upcoming reunion, Bobby Hopkins stopped by and what a great time was had by all.

This reunion is about Football, and in particular a short time in our life where we all pulled together for a common goal.  Stories of these days are getting better as we get older and some of them are unbelievable??????????  (not mine)

Make sure you show up to add your part at the reunion, because laughing and joking never felt so good....

Also looking for a head count to figure who is going to be here.   Planning is all in the details, the number of participants  is kinda important.

Henry Melton is working with a jeweler in Las Vegas to get rings made for both teams, each ring will have your year, either runner-up or state champ, your jersey number and a football for the centerpiece, more to follow as I get more info... BUT we need this info from you to get your ring made.
You can go to a jewelry store or wal mart or just about any department store and get measured for you ring.

If this is your first time here check through the whole site and forward it to your fellow teammates so we can have a great reunion ....

As I recieve your personal contact info I will not post all of it to the web unless you mention you want me to... Just your message's and name, class and number.  Phone numbers email and home address will be kept off the post unless you mention you want it on...

It was Great to hear all the voices From the Past and If you want a Real shocker review the Names on the roster from 1970 the fourth game of the Season.

This is a great opportunity to have a blast, I know It was fun just listening to all the banter on the phone, so come on and contact this web with ring sizes and e mail addresses and lets try to contact all the people who made these two teams something so special that no one in the State of Florida has ever come close to duplicating.

Please email me with things you have from your scrapbooks, memorablia, old programs, newspapers etc. and I will get that stuff on this website asap.

How about a brief bit of info of where you are now, your contact info, and who can you contact, and what you think would be interesting to the rest of us.

Also would like to do a little bit about some of our fellow Cobras who have passed who are scouting the next game.
